She’s a former child soldier who came out of the war with two prosthetic arms and muted emotions. Who is this for? Is it supposed to portray friendship between girls or to look sexy for male fans? Is it both?Īlthough her job title of “auto memory doll” and the many remarks about her appearance make it confusing, Violet is not in fact a doll. Then there’s a lascivious shot of Violet in a towel. She tells Violet “come in the bath with me, it’s what friends do, you want us to be friends, right?”. Isabella repeatedly manipulates Violet into intimate situations. Through doing some digging, I’ve concluded that Violet is supposed to be the same age as her pupil, but there’s still the employer/employee dynamic, the gaze of the adult male watcher, and the fact that Violet acts so robotically subservient. Its even more unsettling that it takes place in a boarding school. That’s not to say homoeroticism is creepy, but here it’s a relationship between a paid employee and her student/employer. There’s voyeuristic homoerotic vibes between Isabella and Violet. I found the first half of the movie utterly creepy. It’s not necessary to have seen the series to understand this movie. Eventually, Isabella asks Violet to help her write a letter to her sister. It’s about Violet taking on the assignment of turoring a young woman, Isabella, in the arts of becoming a fine lady. Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll is a side story movie. It’s set in a sort of European-Victorian setting and it focuses on Violet Evergarden, a young woman who in her past was used as a child soldier and now works for a civilian postal service. Violet Evergarden is an anime series made in Japan that airs on Netflix. I wanted to review something from Japan so I picked this movie that’s available on Netflix.
